LANSDALE, Pa.—June 17, 2010—Microsoft Corp. has named Merck and Company, Inc. and ProtonMedia winners of the company’s Life Sciences Innovation Awards 2010. The awards, announced at the Drug Information Association’s (DIA) 46th annual meeting in Washington, D.C., were given in recognition of innovative solutions in the pharmaceutical and life sciences industry. The awards honor companies that have demonstrated the successful application of available software and devices to revolutionize medicine, bring therapeutic breakthroughs to market faster, fight serious ailments, improve health, and enhance people’s quality of life. Microsoft recognized Merck’s innovative use of ProtonMedia’s ProtoSphere 3-D virtual environment to hold the pharmaceutical industry’s first virtual scientific poster session.

“Between pressure to bring new drugs and therapies to market faster and the persistent and pressing need to cut costs, life sciences companies today are facing tremendous challenges,” said Michael Naimoli, U.S. Life Sciences Industry Solutions Director, Microsoft Corp. “This year’s awards recognize companies that have developed innovative technology solutions based on the Microsoft software platform to achieve significant benefits, whether speeding discovery, time to market, or enhancing collaboration.” Merck partnered with ProtonMedia to develop a 3-D virtual poster session environment in ProtoSphere for employee collaboration, learning, and training. Results measured after the poster session event demonstrated that virtual environments for scientific meetings are well accepted by the current generation of scientists, suggesting that these environments can already be used to deliver immediate value.

ProtoSphere is the first and only virtual collaboration environment to integrate with Microsoft SharePoint services and content. By adding ProtonMedia’s SharePoint Media Carousel to their ProtoSphere environment, companies extend their SharePoint investment and processes while they improve product lifecycle management (PLM) and speed collaborative decision-making in ProtoSphere. ProtonMedia is a Microsoft Life Sciences partner.

“Microsoft is the world’s software leader, and together with its partners, its Life Sciences division forms the foundation of organizations’ technology infrastructures,” says Ron Burns, CEO of ProtonMedia. “Merck’s virtual poster session measurably demonstrates how life sciences companies can combine Microsoft’s technology with an enterprise virtual collaboration environment like ProtoSphere to extend their Microsoft platform and accelerate decision making around all phases of their product lifecycle. We thank Microsoft for recognizing our joint development innovation with Merck.”

Merck’s use of ProtoSphere also earned recognition from the editors of Bio-IT World, who gave Merck its Best Practice Award in the Editors’ Choice Award category in April. The project was also detailed in a recent Nature Chemistry article.

Microsoft Life Sciences Innovation Award participants consisted of worldwide life sciences corporations in drug discovery, scientific research and basic science, medical devices, clinical trials, document and records management, knowledge management, manufacturing and bioprocessing, mobile workers, supply chain, sales and marketing, digital marketing and social networking, personalized medicine, infostructure and desktop and application virtualization. Winners were selected by an esteemed panel of industry experts and will be highlighted on the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com/lifesciences.

LANSDALE, Pa.—June 15, 2010—ProtonMedia, the developer of the ProtoSphere virtual collaboration environment for the high-performance workplace, and LiquidHub, a global technology consulting and systems integration firm, have formed a technology and services partnership. Under the terms of the agreement, ProtonMedia’s ProtoSphere technology will be the basis for 3-D virtual collaboration environments. LiquidHub will provide consultancy, integration, and deployment services to combine ProtoSphere with SharePoint and OCS at life sciences organizations around the world. The result will give life sciences companies an integrated, high-performance workplace that lets them collaborate and accelerate decision-making across their product lifecycles.

“SharePoint and OCS are high value technology platforms for life sciences,” says Rob Kelley, COO of LiquidHub. “However, companies can gain significant benefit from using virtual collaboration technologies to extend their investment in these platforms and address challenges surrounding communications and product lifecycle management. By combining our extensive experience in SharePoint and OCS systems integration with ProtonMedia’s ProtoSphere technology, we’re giving life sciences companies solutions to overcome these challenges, while lowering costs.”

ProtoSphere is the only 3-D virtual collaboration environment to integrate with SharePoint. And LiquidHub’s experience in designing, planning, and implementing Microsoft collaboration solutions for life sciences organizations ensures rapid time to value.

“We see natural synergies between LiquidHub and ProtonMedia,” says Ron Burns, CEO of ProtonMedia. “Both companies are Microsoft partners and have established bases in life sciences. By combining our virtual collaboration technology and LiquidHub’s SharePoint and OCS systems integration expertise, we’re enabling life sciences organizations to speed decision-making across their product lifecycle, cut costs, and create more effective workplaces.”

They will explore lessons learned from these experiences as well as ways other life sciences companies can use ProtoSphere for both their learning and collaboration needs.

Organizations that use this new solution will unlock a high-performance workplace—one that improves employee workflow and productivity; increases operational efficiency; and helps develop, manage and secure the organization’s top talent.

“Integrating a 3-D virtual environment into the job performance model immerses the employee into the process and creates a collaborative environment to obtain the learning and performance capability at the moment of need,” says Patricia Begley, executive vice president, North America, RWD.

Ron Burns, CEO of ProtonMedia, commented: “Few partnerships are as well aligned as our relationship with RWD. We are creating a multi-faceted collaboration platform that can measurably enhance workforce productivity while empowering the individual, and better serving customers. The result is a more effective organization, accelerated employee development, and most importantly, immediate access to information for all.”

April 21, 2010—ProtonMedia, the developer of the ProtoSphere virtual collaboration environment for the high-performance workplace, announced today that it has been included in the list of “Cool Vendors in the High-Performance Workplace, 2010” report by Gartner, Inc., published April 15, 2010.

As stated in the report (ID number G00174986), “Cool vendors in the high-performance workplace are helping to build communities and better connections between people in the know and those who need them.” It continues, “Enhancing collaboration between employees, customers and business partners, delivers value to the enterprise. Looking beyond traditional approaches—perhaps even into virtual environments—may provide better security, better interactions and better outcomes than on-premises.”

ProtoSphere is the market-leading virtual collaboration environment for the high-performance workplace, and the #1 virtual environment for collaborative product lifecycle management (PLM) in life sciences. ProtoSphere’s virtual environment provides an arsenal of business-focused collaboration and communication tools that help companies accelerate decision-making and raise productivity, improving workplace performance overall.

“Gartner is the world’s top information technology research and advisory company, and is often the first source executives turn to for help when making decisions about technology solutions and aligning their IT initiatives with their business objectives,” says Ron Burns, CEO of ProtonMedia. “We believe this is another milestone for ProtoSphere, being acknowledged as an exceptional way for companies to overcome long-established barriers to knowledge transfer, collaboration, and collective decision-making. We thank Gartner for looking at ProtoSphere critically, are honored we held up to its rigorous research process, and feel this is a confirmation of our ability to help companies achieve high-performance collaborative workplaces.”

Global companies are using ProtoSphere to meet their most demanding meeting, collaboration, and decision-making requirements. For example, Merck held the pharmaceutical industry’s first virtual scientific poster session in ProtoSphere, and BP used ProtoSphere to create a virtual collaboration environment for its annual graduate conference, and calculated savings of $3.7 million compared to producing a physical event.

ProtoSphere is also the only virtual collaboration environment for the high-performance workplace that integrates with Microsoft SharePoint services and content. By adding ProtonMedia’s SharePoint Media Carousel to their ProtoSphere environment, companies extend their SharePoint investment and processes while cutting travel costs, raising productivity, and improving engagement.

About Gartner’s Cool Vendors Selection Process

Gartner’s listing does not constitute an exhaustive list of vendors in any given technology area, but rather is designed to highlight interesting, new and innovative vendors, products and services. Gartner disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, with respect to this research, including any warranties of merchantability or fitness of a particular purpose.

Gartner defines a cool vendor as a company that offers technologies or solutions that are: Innovative, enable users to do things they couldn’t do before; Impactful, have, or will have, business impact (not just technology for the sake of technology); Intriguing, have caught Gartner’s interest or curiosity in approximately the past six months.
